Love story in Andalusia

Introduction
My name is Daniel, and I work as a sailor. I spent my childhood nestled between my elderly parents in the countryside of Andalusia. I was a pampered child—or at least that’s how some saw me. Being my parents’ only child, I came into this world when my mother was 39 years old, and my father was in his forties at the time.

My mother was blonde, tall, with blue eyes. She had grown up in Russian cities and always carried a sense of authenticity, nobility, and youthful spontaneity.
My father was a pilot from the state of California. He met my mother, fell in love with her, and when they decided to marry and spend the rest of their lives together, they settled in Andalusia, where I was born and raised.

My father always loved Andalusia—its people, its peaceful countryside free from noise. He was a man who cherished quietness, and that came as no surprise, as he loved reading and was a peaceful soul...

I grew up carrying my father’s wisdom and strength and my mother’s beauty. I’ve always loved traveling, just like my father. While he chose the skies to explore, fascinated by the stars and gazing at them, I carved my own path through the seas of Andalusia—I’ve always loved that world 🌍💜

Love…
A feeling that doesn’t knock on the door of your heart before settling inside it—
you just find yourself suddenly in it.
Like a blooming garden struck by a storm carrying a burning matchstick in its winds—when it landed, it set everything ablaze.
That’s how my heart burned when I lost her.
Oh God, if only this world were free from loss,
and if only that heart wouldn’t fall into the void of the missing…
If it weren’t for the pain of losing her,
the thing that resides deep within my chest would never have caught fire… 💔

It was during the first of my voyages in that cursed, eternal year.
If only you knew how much I hated that year—I even named it that way.
It began with me falling in love for the first time… and it was also the last.
I never dared, nor could my heart attach itself to anyone else after that.
It ended with our separation...
That period felt like thousands of years had passed over me,
and to my heart, it passed like a stabbing ache that lasted for years—
an ache that no healing could ever reach.
Time moved on,
but I aged from within, even if my youth still showed on the outside.

Her name was Maruska—a girl of German origin,
but like me, she had grown up in the countryside of Andalusia...

Maruska: "Heeey! You there! I need your help… I’m here! Over here! Could you please help me?!"

Daniel: "What’s that sound?! Sounds like someone’s calling for help—but where…?"
"Ah—there she is. (She looks... quite stunning.)"

Maruska: "Could you help me? I know you're a sailor, always chasing the blue that keeps you from death. But I need to get out of here…
I don’t have time to explain now, but if you take me with you, I promise I’ll tell you my story."

Daniel: "Alright then, looks like you're joining me on today’s journey.
Give me your hand—I’ll help you aboard..."

Maruska: "Alright. What’s your name?"

Daniel: "My name’s Daniel, and as you already guessed—I’m a sailor.
What about you?"

Maruska: "My name is Maruska, and I come from a well-known family—you’ve probably heard of them. As for work, I don’t have a job… but it seems I’ll have to get one eventually."

Daniel: "Alright… and where exactly are you headed?"

Maruska: "I want to go somewhere empty—where no one can see me, and no one can find me. Somewhere I can start over… without them."

Daniel: "Okay, listen—I’ll be going back to work soon, and I don’t have time to waste solving your riddles. So, would you kindly tell me where exactly I’m supposed to take you?!
And… who are the people you want to start over without?"

Maruska: "You might have to drop me off at the end of the river. I think there’s a cabin in the forest nearby—I could stay there.
As for those people... they’re my family. And there’s no need to explain any further..."

And that’s how the story began...
I found her fleeing the cruelty of her family,
and then she left me—
leaving me to flee from my own sorrow… and the rebellion of my heart.

Coincidence… We like to think everything happens by chance— but the truth is, fate arranges it all. Someone once told me: “Love is the greatest sin—beware of it.” Back then, I didn’t understand what they meant, but now… I wish I had. I would’ve passed by like a mere passerby, had I only realized… One day, you’ll understand how love, the deeper it gets, the deeper the wound it leaves behind. Love… sorrow… betrayal… disappointment— all of them leave scars in you to always remind you of their presence. Time might heal some, but not all scars can be healed. Some are carved into you… forever. Reminder: Maruska: "You might have to drop me off at the end of the river. I think there’s a cabin in the forest nearby—I could stay there. As for those people… they’re my family. And there’s no need to explain any further..." Daniel: We reached the end of the river. I was supposed to head back, start fishing, then return home… But something made me stay. Something I couldn’t understand, couldn’t explain… Yet in the end, it won. Maruska: "Daniel… are you really coming with me to the cabin?" Daniel: "Alright… I think I will." Maruska: "Do you think I was wrong? Should I not have run away from them?" Daniel: "Maybe if I knew why you ran away, I could tell you. But don’t worry—as long as you made the choice that gives you peace. Believe me, peace is the most valuable thing a person can seek." Maruska: "You know something… Maybe meeting you wasn’t a coincidence. I feel like meeting you is actually making a difference in my life." When we got to that cabin, Maruska gave me a necklace… The most beautiful necklace my eyes had ever seen. Maruska: "I want to thank you for being so kind to me this whole journey— and for coming with me here, and helping me fix up this cabin. Thank you for your kindness… and I hope you’ll accept my small gift." Daniel: "You’ll think I’m exaggerating— but this is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever received in all my life in Andalusia. Thank you." It was getting late— I had to leave now. "Goodbye, little one." Maruska: "Daniel… please take care of that necklace. Carry it with you always. Good night..." And so, I left her… but she never left me. She remained, still and silent, in my mind. I realized after I walked away— I had left… but forgot my heart in her possession.

No matter how tightly you close the door to your heart, love will find its way in—without your permission. "What comes quickly also goes quickly..." Just like money comes and goes in the blink of an eye, like the waves that rise suddenly and then calm just as fast, like the winds that rush in and vanish again… Love visited Daniel’s heart just as swiftly. But—will love stay in Daniel’s heart forever? Or will it leave… just as fast as it came? Reminder: Marushka: "Daniel, please take care of that necklace, and always carry it with you. Goodnight..." Daniel: She gave me a necklace like no other. That necklace… It always reminded me of her. Every time her image faded from my mind for even a minute, the necklace would shine and bring her face back again. I don’t know the story behind it… But I went back to her after seven days, seven days where her image never left me. This time, my mind wasn’t empty, and I didn’t stumble for an excuse. I had to tell her… Marushka: Daniel! What are you doing here?! Daniel: That necklace… yes, it brought me back here. Marushka: What? I told you to carry it always, but it seems you lost it… Daniel: I didn’t. But I came to tell you something else. Marushka: And what’s that? Daniel: Well… can I visit you from time to time? You’re a young woman living alone in the middle of a forest, and I’m a sailor—I pass by this area often. What if you faced trouble… or needed something? Surely you need someone by your side… Marushka: Okay, okay, enough with the justifications. It’s fine, Daniel—you can visit whenever you like. Daniel: I knew you’d say yes. Would you… like to have dinner with me? Marushka: I’ve already made dinner, but if you want, you can have a bit of juice. Daniel: Why not? (After she brought the juice) Daniel: You know something? I’m like my father—we both love stargazing. Marushka, do you like watching the stars, too? Marushka: Haha, no wonder you ask— You don’t know I studied astronomy. Every visible star has a name— names we, the astronomers, know. Every cluster has a name too. Daniel, you’ll never love the stars as much as I do. Daniel: Well then, why don’t we sit outside the cabin? We’ll see the stars more clearly there. Marushka: That’s a great idea. (As they gazed at the stars...)

Marushka: You know something? I always wished I were a bright star in the sky... I wished I could light the path of my loved ones, just like the stars do. Maybe I’ll be born again someday—as a shining star in the sky. First, I’m a human on Earth, then a star in the heavens... When I leave this world, my star will remain, lighting your skies. Daniel: That’s a beautiful dream… Just keep thinking and imagining the joyful things you wish for. Marushka: No doubt about that… If it weren’t for imagination, reality would tear us apart, Daniel. Daniel: I know... I live with the ugliness of reality every day, and the saddest part is—I can't live in imagination, not even for a moment like others do. I don’t know why, but I’ve never been able to do that. Not once. Marushka: Seems like you carry a sad story too... I can see a lot of sorrow inside you. Daniel: It’s alright. I’m okay. Marushka: Can I ask you something? What are you staring at like that? Your eyes haven’t looked at the ground even once since we sat here. Daniel: I’m gazing at the stars, drifting in the world of the sky. That way, I can stop seeing the ugliness of the world for a little while... Marushka, what’s the name of that star shining above us? Marushka: Its traditional name is Meissa. It belongs to the constellation Orion, and it’s also called Al-Maisan Star. Daniel: Well, I’ve named it Marushka... It’s as radiant as you, and my eyes have been drawn to it since the first moment I saw it. Marushka: Well then, when my soul departs this life, my star will keep shining nearby... Seems like my dream might come true after all. Daniel: This moment… it’s one I could never get tired of. But it’s getting late, and the waves will rise soon. The sea will become dangerous if I delay my return any longer. And you need rest too, so I’ll take my leave now. Marushka: Alright… go safely, Daniel. I’ll be waiting for your visit another time. When the eyes grow used to meeting often, and encounters become more frequent… That’s how hearts become attached.
